How do I know if I'm 'ready' for counselling?

There's no readiness threshold. Many people come to counselling feeling quite uncertain, confused, or even ambivalent about whether it will help. That's normal — and it doesn't get in the way of the work. The only real prerequisite is some willingness to show up and give it a chance.

What happens in a first session?

The first session is primarily about getting to know each other. Kylie will ask questions about what's brought you in, your background, and what you're hoping to get from the process. It's also an opportunity for you to get a feel for Kylie's style and ask anything you'd like to know. There's no pressure to cover everything — or to have immediate clarity about your 'goals'.

I'm nervous about my first appointment. Is that normal?

Completely. Most people feel some degree of anxiety before their first session — it's an unfamiliar experience, and you're about to talk about things you may not have shared before. Kylie is used to meeting people where they are, and the pace of the first session is always gentle. Many people feel noticeably more at ease within the first 10 minutes.

How long are sessions?

Standard sessions are 50 minutes. This is the therapeutic hour used across most counselling practices — it provides enough time to explore meaningful material without the session feeling rushed or overwhelming.

How often will I need to come?

Accepted Answer

For most people, weekly or fortnightly sessions work well — especially in the early stages. As progress builds, sessions may naturally space out. Kylie will discuss this with you based on your goals and what's feeling useful.

Are sessions in person or online?

Kylie offers both in-person sessions in Brisbane and online sessions via a secure video platform. Many people find online sessions surprisingly effective — and they make counselling more accessible for those with busy schedules or who live outside the immediate area.

Question 8

Can I pause or stop at any time?

Accepted Answer

Yes. There is no lock-in, no minimum number of sessions, and no obligation to continue. If you ever feel the sessions aren't useful, or you want to take a break, you're completely free to do so. Kylie may check in about endings to ensure the process closes well — but the decision is always yours.

Is counselling covered by Medicare or private health insurance?

Counselling with Kylie is not currently covered under the Medicare Better Access scheme (which applies to Clinical Psychologists and some registered Psychologists). However, some private health funds do include counselling in their extras cover — check your policy under 'psychology' or 'counselling'. Kylie can provide receipts for claim purposes.

What is your cancellation policy?

Accepted Answer

Kylie asks for at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations or missed appointments may be charged at the full session rate. Life happens — if something unexpected comes up, just get in touch as soon as possible.

Is everything I share confidential?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Confidentiality is fundamental to the therapeutic relationship. Everything you share with Kylie stays private. There are three narrow legal exceptions: (1) if there is an imminent, serious risk of harm to yourself or another person; (2) if Kylie is subpoenaed by a court; (3) if there is a risk to a child's safety. Kylie will explain these in your first session.

Do you take notes? Who sees them?

Kylie keeps brief session notes as part of her professional practice. These are stored securely and are only accessible to Kylie. They are not shared with third parties (including GPs or employers) without your written consent, except in the legal circumstances described above.

Will my GP or employer know I'm seeing a counsellor?

No. Kylie will not contact your GP, employer, or anyone else without your explicit written consent. Your decision to seek counselling is entirely private.

Do we both have to agree to come?

Ideally, both partners attend together — that's how relationship counselling works best. However, if one partner is uncertain, sometimes a single exploratory session together can help them decide. Kylie is experienced at working with reluctant participants gently.

Is relationship counselling only for couples who are struggling?

Not at all. Many couples come to counselling proactively — to improve communication, navigate a major transition together, or invest in a relationship they value. You don't need to be on the brink of separation to benefit.

What if we decide to separate during counselling?

Accepted Answer

Some couples reach this decision in therapy. When that happens, the counselling process can still be valuable — helping both partners separate with greater understanding, less conflict, and clarity about the road ahead. Relationship counselling isn't about keeping couples together at all costs; it's about supporting both people.
